Established in 1981, the Green Millennium Foundation (GMF) is a BC-registered not-for-profit society with the following main purposes:
- To advance education by providing workshops and seminars regarding food production and other topics related to self-sufficiency
- To relieve poverty by providing food and other basic supplies
- To promote volunteerism for the benefit of the community at large
Past activities have included education about worm-bin composting, and cultural events, including hugely popular Green Millennium Fashion Shows in Vancouver (downtown and in the West End). We are looking into a joint Canada-India project in the Himalayas to alleviate poverty by helping the poor get the tools they need to make it in life. We believe that everyone has a piece of the puzzle and that if we all work together, we can do amazing things to make our world a better place.
Our name may be big, because our hopes are big. But we’re doing all we can as a small and flexible organization that can fit in where a need arises. In that sense, we believe that small is beautiful.
Current directors are Carlton Parfitt (film maker, businessman, media expert), Greg Helten (editor and education campaign director) and Jym Moon (retired SFU professor of environmental toxicology). Randy Helten is currently organizer of the “100-Meter Diets, Gardens, and Food Security in the West End” project.
